In 1959, Zuhrah Nobles responded to the call to form the FIRST Shrine Pipe Band in the United States. Members chose the McGregor tartan for Bob McGregor, the first president of the new group. Letters were written to the Queen of England and the Chief of the McGregor Clan in Scotland requesting official dispensation to wear the McGregor tartan (responses in the affirmative are maintained with pride in the band archives!).The Pipes ‘n Drums went on parade in 1960 playing "Brown Haired Maiden" - the only tune they knew! That same year the band received their charter to become an official unit of Zuhrah Shrine Temple. Since then, parade and competition awards and trophies are a way of life for this unit, competing at Imperial (international) Shrine Sessions, and traveling throughout the U.S. and North America from Toronto to Mexico City (in full winter woolen uniforms!) and from Cincinnati to Honolulu. The band was honored to play for the Queen of England during Her stay in Minneapolis.
Although not all members of the band are of Scottish ancestry, they maintain the discipline and decorum for which the Scottish regimental bands are known -all coupled with their stirring music and colorful uniforms, making them one of the most sought after units for parades and community festivals!
