Prior to 1894, a Shrine 'parade' at a national Shrine convention (called an Imperial Session) consisted primarily of attending Shriners walking en masse through the streets of that city in their everyday clothes and without much organization. This all changed forever when, in 1894 at the Imperial Session at Denver, Captain A.M. Shuey and thirty-three members of the Zuhrah Temple marched in that Session's parade in full uniform and in close-order drill. Thus, the first uniformed parade unit in all of Shrinedom was born.
The Zuhrah Patrol is still going strong today: performing in parades, ceremonies, and drill competitions. Along with its parade function, the Zuhrah Patrol also enjoys a social side with numerous parties, get-togethers, and special events scattered throughout the year. Two events of particular note are the Winter Snowmobile Weekend (a fun time with or without a snowmobile) and the fall Steak Fry. Monies raised by these two events go to the support of the Shriners Hospital for Children. Another event of more dubious note is the time-honored "Igloo." While mere words cannot describe this event, if you ask a Patroler about it, you will more than likely receive a broad smile and a twinkle of the eye.
We meet on the first Tuesday of every month for our stated meetings and, for those inclined to participate in the parades or support those who do, there's a drill every Monday evening. We have a rich legacy and an appreciation of fun. If you have a sense of adventure and can tell your left foot from your right foot (and a score of 50% is passing), then you might enjoy our unit.
